Thomas Tuchel Questions Home Crowd Support Following Emphatic Wales Victory.
The England head coach expressed his sadness that the England team did not get more encouragement from the Wembley fans during their impressive 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday evening.
The manager was pleased to see his team showcase their winning momentum, with strikes from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the opening quarter settling the contest. But, he was not content with the energy at the iconic venue.
“We had limited sessions to prepare against a organized team and we did very well,” Tuchel remarked. “It could have been five goals ahead at the break. We missed the additional goals. It was quiet. We didn’t get any energy back from the stands. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you provide in the first quarter? We prevented them escape. If you hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s regrettable because the team warranted better encouragement today.”
“I maintain this statement. We cannot do more than being three goals up in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a little more backing in phases where it is challenging.”
“After halftime, to cheer us on, there was excessive backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to regain energy, but that’s football and that is it.”
Selection Choices Justified by Display
Apart from potentially starting a fight with fans, the manager also created controversy by omitting Bellingham and Phil Foden from his team selection. But the move was justified by Rogers impressing again in the attacking midfield role and scoring his first international goal.
“That’s his style,” the head coach said. “He is a No 10 and he is vying for his spot.”
Bellamy Seeks Lessons from Defeat
Craig Bellamy expressed hope that Wales, who host a strong Belgian side in a crucial World Cup qualifier on next week, improve after their disappointing performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I wanted this friendly,” Bellamy said. “I wanted to assess where we are. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? Today fills me with motivation.”
Injury Concern for Watkins
Watkins was withdrawn at half-time after colliding with a goalpost and may miss out when the national team play their next opponents in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on next week.
